In 1947, a young Princess Elizabeth delivered a widely broadcast speech on the occasion of her twenty-first birthday. In this speech, she pledged her lifelong commitment to serving the Commonwealth: "I solemnly declare before you all that my entire life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our esteemed imperial family, to which we all belong." These words would later prove prophetic when, five years later, she ascended to the throne as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, marking the beginning of a historic reign spanning over seventy years – the longest of any British Monarch. Traditionally, coins bear the likeness of a Monarch on the obverse, serving as a testament to their reign. Queen Elizabeth II's seven decades of service are symbolized numismatically through six effigies that have graced Australian coins. These striking portraits take center stage in the reverse design of both the silver proof and uncirculated versions of this coin. Through them, the Royal Australian Mint commemorates the significant era known as the Second Elizabethan Era.
