Originally introduced to replace the two dollar note, the size and specifications of the two dollar coin were determined after careful consideration of factors such as the needs of the visually impaired community, security requirements, and a preference to avoid non-standard coin shapes.
Since its inception, the designs adorning Australia's circulating two dollar coins have commemorated numerous significant Australian historical and cultural narratives. The tradition of releasing commemorative designs on circulating two dollar coins commenced in 2012 with the striking Remembrance Day poppy coin, marking the beginning of a series of tributes to Australian stories.
