Australia's lengthiest military engagement of the twentieth century was the Vietnam War. What began as a military training team evolved over the course of more than a decade into a battalion and eventually a task force. All branches of the Australian armed forces, the Army, Navy, and Air Force, all participated in the conflict. The Army assumed the primary responsibility, concentrating its operations mainly in Phuoc Tuy Province in South Vietnam. Approximately 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam, with 521 casualties and numerous others injured, until the final withdrawal of Australian troops in December 1973.
